International marketing students in Kennesaw State’s Master of Business Administration program recently began collaborating with Amani Project, a nonprofit that works with community organizations in five countries to create free music-making clubs for at-risk children.

    Donor to help international students feel at home at KSU

    Harry Vardis knows firsthand the value of receiving a college scholarship as an international student, so he is providing that same opportunity to students at Kennesaw State University. Vardis, 79, has committed a seven-figure donation to establish a legacy scholarship fund – the Harry and Athena Vardis Scholarships – which will be given to deserving KSU students, with a focus on students from foreign countries.

    Support system at KSU has been asset to accounting grad

    Blake Gordon is graduating magna cum laude with his accounting degree from the Michael J. Coles College of Business and accepting a job offer from a prominent accounting firm. But his road to success was not always easy. Gordon, 31, already had survived cancer, battled depression and undergone treatment following years of alcohol addiction prior to enrolling at Kennesaw State University in his late 20s. As a student, he also faced some financial hardships.

    Kennesaw State students partner with state government to grow music industry

    The state of Georgia is looking to strengthen its position in the music business, hoping for a repeat of the success still enjoyed by the film and television industries. To that end, they recently partnered with Kennesaw State University to develop a statewide database of musicians and related professionals that will help productions locate Georgia talent. Earlier this year the Georgia Department of Economic Development asked Kennesaw State’s Joel A. Katz Music and Entertainment Business (MEBUS) program to create a directory of the roughly 20,000 Georgians working in various capacities within the music industry. The recently launched directory includes artists, venues, studios, managers, marketing firms, attorneys and schools.

    Donors follow family example of helping others

    Inspired by the lessons from their own fathers to work hard and help others, Rick and Julie Bennett have established an endowment to provide scholarships for many Kennesaw State University students in the years to come. Rick, a Kennesaw State Foundation trustee, and his wife Julie have committed $100,000 for the William N. Bennett and Jule Blair Memorial Scholarship, named after their fathers, to assist KSU Journey Honors College students pursuing accounting degrees.

    Kennesaw State graduate thrives in film industry

    In a Savannah movie theater 22 years ago, a 4-year-old girl sat, entranced, watching the blockbuster Titanic with her mother. It was an event that would make a lasting impression on her life and career. “It was the first movie I sat through and watched the whole thing – and it was a long movie – not saying a single word,” said Katie Boaen, now working in the prop and set decorating departments of Georgia’s thriving film industry. “I was captivated by it at that age – the scale of everything coming together; I remember it to this day.” Boaen is “a huge movie buff” who has always liked storytelling and mixing it with art. She graduated from the Joel A. Katz Music and Entertainment Business Program at Kennesaw State University in 2018. Her end goal was to turn a hobby into a profession and earn some income in the process.
